Jo Anne's Story
My family moved to GP in January 1965, middle of my sophomore year... and NO, we are not related to anyone in Grants Pass or anywhere in Oregon. My paternal grandfather's surname was changed at Ellis Island in the late 1800's from Smolej when he arrived from the Slovakia area of the then-Austro-Hungarian empire.
I spent one year at U of Portland, then in May 1968 discovered none of my credit hours were transferable... major bummer. But this caused me to change my major from education to accounting. I am still number-crunching, currently working as the corporate bookkeeper for a real estate/property management firm here in Bellingham.
I married my soul-mate, Denny, in November 1968, and we have been together ever since. We raised two great sons; one is married. Denny and I have been living in Bellingham, WA since Fall 1992, and love it! The best of both worlds, the Puget Sound and Mt. Baker!
We've done a lot as a family throughout the years; since early 2002 we have been supporting our oldest, Scott, in Clean Racing, his business. He is crew chief for a pro-rally car racing team, MozartRacing.com (check us out on the website for a family photo) 2006 US National Pro-Rally co-champs! Scott inherited his excellent mechanical skills from his dad and prepares a really bullet-proof car for Wolfie.
Denny and I are very involved in ministry with our church,...Expand for more
Freedom Fellowship, here in the Whatcom County, WA area. We are part of the leadership team, and we both lead worship, teach Sunday School, and he is the lead sound tech.
My love of music began at a really early age... and I really enjoyed being in A Capella Choir my senior year, even though as a first soprano I was forced to sing alto! I became a part of the musicians' fellowship at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa (CA)in the early 80's, and spent time as a production assistant at Maranatha!Music working for Tommy Coomes and becoming friends with the most gifted musicians in the contemporary Christian music scene. Denny and I love using the music of Hillsongs Australia, Brian Doerksen, Twila Paris, Chris Tomlin, Casting Crowns, The Parachute Band, and many others to lead our church family into the throne room.
I travel to the Slovak Republic each summer to teach conversational English to children there; 2010 will be my 9th year to go. I now have an adopted family in Lucenec, Slovakia, and love spending time with them each year when I am there. I am also a gourmet cook, jewelry designer, and PartyLite consultant.
Denny and I have a 32' travel trailer that we use to go camping at the many great places around our state, and are hoping to take it more into Oregon and the rest of the western states in the upcoming years.
If you are in our area, come say "hi"!
